Caetani Splash - Return to Rome - a Fundraising Gala and Art Auction
Lot 15:
Gary Whitley
Gary Whitley paints visual representations of our times using the colours of our local environment so they are immediately recognizable. The challenge for him is to attempt to create the visual illusion of the third dimension, i.e. paint the air between things. Gary has exhibited his works in commercial galleries in Canada, from Victoria B.C. to Montreal, Quebec, as well as various exhibitions around the world, including Cultural Exchange shows in China and Taiwan.
Gary regards his paintings as visual representations of our times and paints with the local colours of our environment so they are immediately recognizable. He strives to pick subject matter that will bring back individual memories to the viewer of a time and place. The challenge for him is to attempt, on a 2-
dimensional canvas, create the visual illusion of the third dimension, i.e. paint the air between things, so that one object truly feels Iike there is distance between it and another object. Painting air is a lot easier said than done, but when a painting succeeds, the viewer has the feeling they can walk around in
the painting and floral paintings have the feeling of distance between petals.
