Of the many artistic mediums James has worked with and mastered, he works primarily in acrylics, oils, and fresco painting (which he experimented with during two residencies at Caetani house in 2011 and 2012). He credits many influences and mentors over his career, including the encouragement of Jack Shadbolt, Ken Kirkby, Rick Bond, and Father Dunstan Massey, the Benedictine monk who taught him fresco. He is represented at Kurbatoff Gallery, Vancouver, BC and Gibson Fine Art in Calgary, Alberta.
